Lake Rd, Waterhead Bay, Ambleside, LA22 0HD Show on map 0.53 miles from AmblesideAmbleside is located in Cumbria in the Lake District. The beauty of the nearby lakes is one of the main reasons for visiting Ambleside, but there are also many other local attractions as well. Visitors will find plenty of local history at the Armitt Library and Museum. The 70 foot waterfall, Stock Ghyll Force, is definitely a sight that should not be missed. The Bridge House, which dates back to the 17th century, is now an information centre and can be found at the top of Stock Ghyll. There are also many shops, pubs and eateries to enjoy in the local area as well.
Ambleside is located in Cumbria, on the banks of Lake Windermere. It is one of the main places to stay in the Lake District and offers easy access for exploring the area. The town is often used as a base for walkers and climbers. You can also take a steamer across the lake to visit Bowness-on-Windermere or Lakeside if you prefer a gentler time.
Ambleside goes back to at least the time of the Romans and to the south of the town is Galava, a Roman fort dating back to 79 AD. You can explore the remains of the fort and visualise what it must have looked like in Roman times.
If your visit to Ambleside is in early July, you may be able to experience the Rushbearing Festival, which is a procession where rushes are taken to the local church and laid across its floor. The idea of this was to warm up the otherwise cold, earthen floor of the church and make it more welcoming.
Most of the activities in Ambleside centre around outdoor activities and enjoying the magnificent scenery of the English Lake District. If the weather is inclement, there are also a number of museums and galleries that you can visit instead. The many visitors that are attracted to the town mean that there is a good selection of restaurants to eat in as well as plenty of places to stay in Ambleside.
