Treasurer's House | ![]() |
The Treasurer's House, located on Chapter House just behind York Minster, was built in 1419. Its original role was as the home of the Minster's treasurer, hence the name. Since then it has had numerous different owners, and has been substantially altered over the years. Since 1930 it has been owned by the National Trust who have extensively restored the house. Legend has it that when workmen were repairing the cellars a ghostly regiment of Roman legionnaires marched through the cellar. Allegedly all of the ghosts were mysteriously cut off at the knees. Subsequent excavations discovered evidence of a Roman Road running below the cellar floor! Aside from the possibility of ghosts, you can see an excellent collection of medieval artefacts, 17th and 18th century furniture and furnishings, and an audio-visual presentation on the history of the house. The Treasurer's House is open daily (except Fridays) between March and October, from 10.30am to 5pm. Entry is free to NT members, £3.50 to non-members. |
