To the north-east of York city centre, just outside the City Walls, you will find the Museum Gardens which offer a sea of tranquillity amid the hustle and bustle of the city.

The gardens are laid out on the site of what were once the grounds of St Mary's Abbey. In the 19th century the Yorkshire Philosophical Society planted a botanical garden here, the result of which you see today.

Today you can see the ruined remains of the Abbey in the heart of the gardens and the nearby Yorkshire Museum. Also in the Museum Gardens is a small Astronomical Observatory.

The Museum Gardens are open daily from dawn until dusk.
