Otherwise known as the ARC, this Centre is run by the York Archaeology Trust, the same people who run the famous Jorvik Viking Centre. It is located on St Saviourgate around the corner from The Shambles.

The only centre of its kind in the UK, the ARC offers a superb hands-on approach to archaeology, making it a must for children as well as adults.

You can sift through earth searching out pieces of pottery or bones, and even have a go at making Viking shoes. There are also some high-tech galleries where you can help re-construct a settlement from the past, using computers.

The ARC is open daily from 10am to 4.30pm Mondays to Fridays and from 1pm to 4.30pm at weekends. Entry costs around £3.50.
