Edinburgh Town Guide, The Monument, 1K The monument was built in 1807 in the shape of the doomed Admiral's telescope.

On the very top of it is a time ball, which falls each day at 1.00pm precisely, to the accompaniment of the One O'clock Gun of the Edinburgh Castle.

There are 145 steps up the inside of Nelson's Monument which, if you can be bothered with the climb, is worth it for the amazing views from the top. But don't climb up if you are faint hearted for the walls around the viewing platform aren't that high.

Nelson's Monument is open Mondays to Saturdays but times vary according to day and season so check in advance. Entry costs around £2 for adults.
