Edinburgh Town Guide, The River, 1K Edinburgh is situated on the banks of the Firth of Forth, the huge inlet that cuts into Scotland between Lothian and Fife.

This river has had a central role in the development of Edinburgh through the centuries, for the nearby port of Leith contributed greatly to Edinburgh's success and prosperity.

Edinburgh Town Guide, The Bridges, 1K Today the Firth of Forth is most famous for its two magnificent bridges, the Forth Bridge, which carries the railway across the river, and the Forth Road Bridge.

The original Forth Bridge is the railway bridge. It was built in 1890 and consists of over 50,000 tons of metal! Over the years this bridge has become one of the world's most distinctive feats of Victorian engineering and is a symbol for the whole of Scotland.

The Forth Road Bridge joined the railway bridge in 1964, and at 1½ miles in length is one of the world's longest suspension bridges.
