Welcome

Situated on the banks of the River Usk, the ancient town of Crickhowell (the name being derived from the Welsh Crug Hywel or Hywel's Fort) nestles between the spectacular Brecon Beacons and the more intimate folds of the Black Mountains. The two ranges combine to form the National Park, one of the largest and most beautiful in the UK.

To the south of the town the imposing Llangattock Escarpment divides the Usk Valley from the hills and towns of the South Wales valleys and - on the coast - the Welsh capital, Cardiff. This means you can combine the best ofrural and urban pleasures during even a short stay at The Dragon. You can also drive southwest through the National Park to Swansea and the beautiful, unspoilt beaches of the Gower Peninsula.

Your stay

The Grade II, 17th century Dragon Inn is one of the most distinctive buildings in the Brecon Beacons National Park and it boasts a very distinctive kitchen. Head chef Robert Duggan is one of the most experienced professionals in the region, having worked nationally with Trust House Forte and locally at The Angel Hotel, Abergavenny and The King of Prussia near Raglan. His cooking combines finesse with heartiness and makes best use of local beef, pork, lamb and chicken. He also takes daily deliveries of seafood from Moby Nick of Plymouth. Dishes include monkfish and prawns in acreamy garlic sauce and grilled red mullet on a saffron rissotto.

Meat lovers should enjoy sirloin of Welsh Black, pork loin on apple mash with cider sauce or guinea fowl on a bubble & squeak mash with Madeira sauce. Robert is a good baker and makes his own bread, pate and a range ofgorgeous desserts.

A relaxed atmosphere, good food, character furnishing and our personal attention should combine to make your stay a pleasurable one.

About the Dragon Inn

Ex-journalist Ashley Nield purchased the The Dragon Inn on July 31st 2007. Since then he and a team of local craftsmen have restored the facade of the 17th century, grade 11* building. The work has earned a commendation fromthe National Park Authority. Further improvements will be made to the facilities but always in a way which emphasizes the heritage of the building.

Every year the Dragon welcomes back many guests who keep returning to enjoy the hotel and and the wonderful Brecon Beacons National Park. Here you can enjoy walking, riding, cycling, shooting, sailing, canoeing, gliding, paragliding, golf and more. Cultural attractions include sites of special scientific interest, castles, hill forts and abbeys and a World HeritageSite at Blaenavon, cradle of the industrial revolution.

Ashley & the team look forward to welcoming you to The Dragon Inn soon.
