No trip to Stratford-upon-Avon is complete without a visit to one of its three acclaimed theatres - the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the Swan Theatre and The Other Place.
The most famous of the three is the Royal Shakespeare Theatre for this is the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Seating 1,500 people, the theatre plays host to all manner of performances, with about half a dozen of Shakespeare's plays being performed each season.
The much smaller Swan Theatre seats around 430 people, and can be found around the back of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
It was finally opened in 1986 after a fire in 1926 burned down The Memorial Theatre. The Swan is a recreation of an Elizabethan playhouse with seating around 3 sides of the stage, making it both an unusual and intimate venue.
The Other Place is the most recent of the three theatres, opening in 1996. This is where more unusual and experimental drama productions are performed.
The Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Swan Theatre can both be found on Waterside, on the banks of the River Avon. The Other Place is located a few hundred yards away on Southern Lane.
It is highly advisable to book tickets well in advance for all three of the theatres, which will cost you anything from £5 to £50 depending on the performance and the venue. |
