Nottingham Town Guide, 11K Perhaps the world's most famous outlaw, Robin Hood is a legend that has endured over the centuries.

The origins of the legend, however, are shrouded in mist and the true identity of Robin is still unknown to this day - suggestions range from a Saxon farmer to the dispossessed Earl of Huntingdon.

Tradition has it that Robin and his Merry Men lived in the 13th century, during the troubled reigns of Richard the Lionheart and John I.

However, the earliest known reference to Robin Hood dates from over 100 years later, in 1377. Details of the man were sketchy even then, and it has been suggested that he was, in fact, a fictional figure.

More details, for example Maid Marion, were added to the story over the next few centuries and by the 15th century the myth had really taken off.

It is the fact that Robin is so closely associated with fighting for the rights of the common man in the face of corruption and exploitation that accounts for his popularity. His motto "Take from the rich to give to the poor" has struck a chord with numerous generations.

Over the years Robin has inspired numerous songs, stories and more recently films - a clear indication of his enduring appeal.

And in Nottingham today the legend lives on. Attractions relating to Robin include the Tales of Robin Hood and of course Sherwood Forest.
