    Bessie Surtees' House

Bessie Surtees is one of Newcastle's most famous past residents, notorious for a scandal she caused in the 18th century.

A wealthy woman and a prominent member of Newcastle's high society, Bessie shocked the city by eloping to Scotland with a working class man - not the done thing at the time.

But perhaps even more surprisingly, the man in question eventually became a politician, achieved the position of Chancellor and died as Lord Eldon.

Today Bessie Surtees' former home has been renovated by English Heritage and is now an excellent example of an 18th century town house.

Bessie Surtees' House is located on The Close, to the south-east of the city centre and at the northern end of the Swing Bridge. It is open from 10am to 4pm Mondays to Fridays. Admission is free.
