Manchester Town Guide, Central Library, 5K Manchester Town Guide, M, 2Kanchester's John Rylands Library can be found on Deansgate, to the west of St Peter's Square.

It is named after John Rylands, a wealthy 19th century industrialist. The building is built in the neo-Gothic style and is one of the city's finest Victorian buildings.

Now part of the University of Manchester, it is considered to be one of the most important libraries in Britain. Among its excellent collection are some very rare and old books, and some manuscripts that date back to approximately 2000BC.

The library is open to the public daily except on Sundays, but opening hours vary so do check in advance. Admission is free.

Manchester Town Guide, T, 2Khe University of Manchester is located on Oxford Road, to the south of the city centre.

First founded in the 19th century, it is now home to over 18 000 students, which makes it one of the biggest universities in the UK. It is also considered by many to be one of the best universities in the country, with leading academics in all fields teaching here.

For tourists, the main attractions of the University are the University Museum and the more famous Whitworth Art Gallery.

Manchester Town Guide, V, 2Kisitors to Manchester can visit the University's Museum on Oxford Road, which is home to an eclectic collection of artefacts from around the world.

Many of these were collected by the city's wealthy 18th and 19th century industrialists when it was a matter of great social prestige to have travelled to exotic lands.

The museum is of particular interest to anyone who is keen on Egyptology, for it houses the second largest collection of Egyptian mummies in Britain (the largest collection is housed in the British Museum in London).

The University Museum is open to the public daily from 10am to 5pm, except on Sundays. Admission is free.

Manchester Town Guide, City Art Gallery, 7K Manchester Town Guide, N, 2Kow part of the University of Manchester, the Whitworth Art Gallery was originally founded in the late 19th century to house the private collection of one of the city's wealthy industrialists.

First opened to the public in 1908, it contains, among other things, the best collection of antique wallpaper and textiles in the country. It is also renowned for its collection of English watercolours, including over fifty by Turner.

The Whitworth Art Gallery can be found on Oxford Road, to the south of the city centre. It is open from 10am to 5pm Mondays to Saturdays and from 2pm to 5pm on Sundays. Admission is free.
