Manchester Town Guide, Map, 3K Manchester Town Guide, M, 2K any of Manchester's prime tourist attractions are located in the city centre, and these are all fairly easy to get to by foot.

St Peter's Square is regarded by many to be at the very heart of the city and this is where you will find the Town Hall, City Art Gallery and Central Library.

To the west of St Peter's Square is the district of Castlefield. This is where two of Manchester's most popular tourist attractions are situated - the Museum of Science and Industry, and the Granada Studios.

To the north of the city centre you can visit, among other things, the Cathedral and Chetham's School of Music. It was in this part of the city that the IRA bomb of 1996 caused such devastation, and so this is where much of Manchester's dramatic rejuvenation is taking place.

And to the south of the centre you can visit attractions such as Bridgewater Hall and the Whitworth Art Gallery.

Further out from the city centre, some of Manchester's suburbs are also worth a visit.

For example if you head south of the city centre you will come to the University of Manchester, which lends this part of the city a vibrant and youthful edge.

And further south again there is the district of Rusholme, home to Manchester's Indian population and the place to head for a good Indian meal. And to the southwest of Rusholme is Hulme where there is a vibrant afro-Caribbean community.

Manchester is also home to a thriving Chinese community of over 20,000 - the second largest Chinese community in the country. Centred around Falkner Street, close to the coach station, Manchester's very own Chinatown is worth visiting for a taste of the orient.

The area around the coach station is also often dubbed the Gay Village, for this is also the focus of Manchester's gay community - one of the most active and open gay communities in the UK.

And of course, also on the outskirts of the city there is Old Trafford, home to Manchester United - the most famous football (soccer) team in the UK.

The Metrolink tramway is often the best way to get to the outer lying areas of the city.
