Manchester Town Guide, M, 2K anchester's Cathedral is located at the northern end of Deansgate, close to Chetham's School of Music.

The first church to be built on the site was founded in the 9th century. The present building is the third to be built here and it dates from around the 15th century, however it has been substantially altered since then.

It is built in the Perpendicular style and is famous as having the widest nave of any church in England - 114 ft wide. It is also renowned for its choir, which studies at the nearby Chetham's School of Music.

During the Second World War a bomb destroyed most of the interior, and so most of what can be seen today is relatively modern. The 1996 bomb caused some more damage to the Cathedral, but today it is all but restored.

The Cathedral is open to the public daily from 8am to 6pm. Admission is free.

Chetham's School of Music is a specialist day and boarding school for talented young musicians.

With over 380 boys and girls aged 8 - 18 studying at the School, Chetham's has a broad musical and academic curriculum taught by one of the finest faculties of instrumental and academic staff in the country and is at the forefront of music education in Britain, Europe and the world.

The buildings of Chetham's date back to the early fifteenth century when they were originally built as the Manor House of Thomas de la Warre, Lord of the Manor of Manchester and rector of the parish church. After this it was turned into an orphanage for "forty poor boys" in 1653 with money left from the will of Humphrey Chetham. This charity remained the same until nearly 300 years later when, in 1952, Chetham's became a grammar school for 100 boys.

The final change happened in 1969 when Chetham's started a new life as a specialist, co-educational school for young musicians. Now with over 280 pupils (boys and girls) ages 8-18, Chetham's is still housed in and around the historic fifteenth century College building
