The People's Palace, located in the heart of Glasgow Green, is one of Glasgow's most popular tourist attractions. The "Palace" was originally built in the late 19th century, as a social history museum of the city - a very forward-thinking concept in Victorian times. Today the excellent museum traces the history of Glasgow from the 12th century right up until the present day with all manner of eclectic exhibits. Also worth visiting are the lovely glass houses, which are home to the Winter Gardens. The People's Palace is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Admission is free. |

Provand's Lordship, located opposite St Mungo's Museum of Religion and Life, is the oldest surviving house in the whole of Glasgow. It dates from 1471 when it was built for the chaplain of the nearby St Nicholas Hospital, but in its time it has also been an inn, a private residence and even a shop. Today it is a museum tracing the history of the house, with lots of period furniture and furnishings dotted about. Behind the house is the well hidden Garden of St Nicholas, a delightful herb garden which shows the changing styles and methods of herb gardening with both medieval and renaissance style herb beds. Provand's Lordship is open daily from 11am to 5pm. Admission is free. |
