The city of Glasgow stretches out over a wide area, and unlike most cities has no distinct city centre.

But most visitors to the city would probably consider George Square to be the city centre - for this is where they are most likely to arrive as Glasgow's two railway stations are located here and so is the bus station.

This area has recently undergone much rejuvenation and is a popular place for tourists to head for - this is where you will find attractions such as the City Chambers, the Gallery of Modern Art and Glasgow's main shopping centres.

To the east of George Square is Merchant City, as the name suggests the heart of Glasgow's business district.

If you venture further east still you will find Glasgow's East End. In the past this area was very poor and run-down, and even today traces of poverty remain.

But the last few years have seen massive improvements and for tourists the district boasts the excellent People's Palace and the Barras Market.

In contrast, to the west of Central Station is Glasgow's West End, which was traditionally the more affluent side of the city. This is where you will find graceful sweeping streets, elegant Victorian architecture and pretty parks.

Tourist attractions in the West End include the Transport Museum, the Hunterian Art Gallery and the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery.

The West End is also where the University is located and so this part of Glasgow tends to have a young, energetic and student-y feel to it.

And with plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants the West End is a good place to head for if you want to sample Glasgow's night life.

Because Glasgow is such a sprawling city, the tourist attractions tend to be quite spread out. But the city has a good public transport system, especially the Underground, which you might want to use to get around.
