Edinburgh Town Guide, Royal Observatory, 6K

Although you will have to leave the city centre behind, if you are into astronomy then Edinburgh's Royal Observatory is well worth a visit.

Edinburgh Town Guide, Planet 20K

Edinburgh Town Guide, The Observatory, 1K The City Observatory was Edinburgh's first obserbatory, established on the top of Calton Hill in 1818.

However pollution from Edinburgh meant that the stars couldn't be seen from that spot and so a few years later the Royal Astronomer established a new Royal Observatory on Blackford Hill on the southern outskirts of the city.

There is now an excellent Visitors' Centre, which tells of the history of the Observatory together with information on the science of astronomy. With interactive models, videos and computer games, the exhibition is an excellent high-tech display, which should keep kids entertained.

There is also a viewing platform with views across the city and some telescopes where you can have a go at star-gazing yourself.

The Royal Observatory is open daily from 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and from noon to 5pm Sundays. Entry costs around £2.50 for adults.
