Edinburgh Town Guide, South Queensferry, 6K

South Queensferry is a small town situated on the banks of the Firth of Forth, a few miles to the west of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh Town Guide, The Town, 1K The town of South Queensferry was founded in the 11th century by Queen Margaret, and, like its sister town on the opposite bank, takes its name from the fact that the queen encouraged people to cross the river to visit a holy shrine at St Andrew's by granting a free ferry service.

Today both South and North Queensferry are overshadowed by two more modern crossings across the Forth, the mighty Forth Rail Bridge and the Forth Road Bridge. It is a picturesque little town, worth visiting for its unusual, twisting streets.

There are also several attractions in South Queensferry, including the Queensferry Museum, which tells the story of the town; the ruins of St Colm's Abbey on the island of Inchcolm; and various boat trips along the river. And nearby there is Dalmeny House and the excellent Hopetoun House.

In addition, just across the river, in North Queensferry, is the area's most recent attraction - the hugely popular Deep Sea World.
