Edinburgh Town Guide, Portobello, 4K

As Edinburgh expanded during the 18th and 19th centuries, it gradually incorporated several smaller towns and villages in its boundaries.

The town of Portobello was one of these, and it offers a very unexpected side to Edinburgh - a beach.

Edinburgh Town Guide, The Town, 1K Portobello dates from the 18th century and is named after the successful capture of the town of Puerto Bello in Panama in 1739.

It quickly became a popular tourist resort, particularly during the Victorian era when seaside towns were hugely fashionable.

By the end of the 19th century the town had been incorporated into Edinburgh's boundaries, although it still retains its own separate identity being several miles from central Edinburgh.

Today Portobello is a little run down, but it retains a pleasant atmosphere with a nice promenade to wander down. But most importantly the beach still offers a little bit of the seaside to the city folk of Edinburgh, and so on a sunny day it will still attract the crowds.
