Edinburgh Town Guide |
Parliament House, located in Parliament Square on the Royal Mile, is one of Edinburgh's landmark buildings. |
The building dates from the 1630s when it was built to house the Scottish Parliament. And it continued to do so until the Act of Union in 1707 meant that Scotland became governed by the Houses of Parliament in London. After 1707 the building then became part of the Scottish judicial system providing chambers for Scotland's judges and barristers. Today it is still the central building for Scottish law containing the Supreme Law Courts of Scotland. You can gain access to the interior of Parliament House on most weekdays and it is well worth it for the inside of the building is fantastic and includes a massive hammerbeam roof and a collection of interesting paintings. But remember that as this is also a working court of law a certain amount of decorum is required! |
