Edinburgh Town Guide, Newhaven, 4K

Situated on the banks of the Firth of Forth, just west of the port of Leith, is the village of Newhaven.

Once a seperate village in its own right, as Edinburgh expanded Newhaven became absorbed into the city.

Edinburgh Town Guide, The Village, 1K Newhaven dates from the 16th century when James IV founded it as a centre for shipbuilding. At first the village was known as "Our Lady's Port of Grace" but was soon renamed Newhaven.

Over the years it grew into a thriving fishing community renowned for its fish market. Newhaven fishwives became a familiar site on the streets of Edinburgh as they sold their goods from baskets known as a "creels".

Although the shipbuilding is no more and the fishing boats have all but disappeared, Newhaven still retains a distinctly nautical feel. And recent years have seen a vast amount of restoration work in the village giving it a distinctly picturesque atmosphere.
Edinburgh Town Guide, Newhaven Heritage Centre, 1K There is also the interesting and informative Newhaven Heritage Centre located on Pier Place, which tells the history of the village and the industries that once supported it.

The Heritage Centre is open daily from noon to 5pm. Entry is free.
