Situated on the top of Calton Hill is Edinburgh's National Monument, one of the more unusual of the city's sights.
|
In the 1820's it was decided that a monument should be erected in Edinburgh to commemorate the Scottish soldiers who died in the Napoleonic Wars of 1815. The design that was eventually chosen for this monument was a replica of the Parthenon in Greece and so, despite the fact that only half the necessary funds had been raised, work began in 1826. | |
However, three years later the funds had run out with only 12 of the columns completed. The result is a remarkably intact "ruin" that was once so unpopular it was nicknamed "Edinburgh's Disgrace". |
