Edinburgh Town Guide, Magdalen Chapel, 5K

Located on Cowgate in Edinburgh's Old Town is the attractive 16th century Magdalen Chapel.

Edinburgh Town Guide, The Chapel, 1K The chapel was originally built as an almshouse by the wealthy MacQueen family.

Then in the 17th century it became the property of the Incorporation of Hammermen, Edinburgh's metalworkers guild, who used it as their guildhall and who much of the adorning metal work can be attributed to.

It then went into a period of decline and was put to a variety of uses. However recent restoration work has been very successful and it is now home to the Scottish Reformation Society, and is sometimes used as the venue for musical recitals.

A particularly interesting part of the chapel are the stained glass windows on the south wall, which are the only pre-Reformation stained glass windows still in their original place in the whole of Scotland.

Magdalen Chapel is open from 9.30am to 4.30pm Mondays to Fridays. Entry is free.
