Hogmanay is the name that Scots give to the New Year - and boy do they know how to celebrate it.

In fact, in Scotland the celebration of Christmas is often overshadowed by the huge amount of partying that takes place over the New Year.

Edinburgh Town Guide, New Year, 1K For many, Edinburgh is the place to go if you want to really celebrate New Year, and over the years the city has become famous the world over for its Hogmanay street parties that last for up to three days.

This makes it the biggest winter celebration in Europe and it is now a slick Festival type event with bands, dances, and special events laid on. However in recent years its popularity has led to concerns about safety and so entry to the town centre is now limited to those with advance tickets.

The New Year celebrations traditionally took place in the Old Town, with the street parties focussed on the Royal Mile. However in more recent years the celebrations have drifted to the Princes Street Gardens part of town.
