Edinburgh Town Guide, Duddingston, 4K

As Edinburgh grew in the 18th and 19th centuries, it gradually absorbed several surrounding towns and villages, one of them being the village of Duddingston.

Edinburgh Town Guide, The Village, 1K Situated to the east of the city centre, on the edge of Holyrood Park, Duddingston is one of the best preserved of Edinburgh's villages, and as such is one of the prettiest.

The village dates from the 12th century and the name is alleged to be derived from the Gaelic meaning "the house on the sunny side of the hill". For much of its history the village was surrounded by farmland and, whilst now it is surrounded by Edinburgh, it still retains a distinctly rural feel having been a conservation area since 1975.

If you visit Duddingston you will no doubt notice that the inhabitants are particularly proud of the fact that the legendary Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed in the village the night before he defeated the English at the Battle of Prestonpans.

Edinburgh Town Guide, Duddingston Loch, 1K To the east of the village, Duddingston Loch is the only natural Loch in Holyrood Park and is now a bird sanctuary.

The Loch is also the setting for one of Edinburgh's most famous paintings, Raeburn's Reverend Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch.

Edinburgh Town Guide, Duddingston Kirk, 1K Also close to the village is the lovely Duddingston Kirk which, dating from the 12th century, is one of the oldest churches in the whole of Scotland that is still in use.
