As Edinburgh's boundaries expanded, it gradually absorbed several smaller towns and villages. One of these is the village of Dalmeny, which lies several miles to the west of central Edinburgh. |

It is well worth visiting the village of Dalmeny for it boasts one of the best preserved Norman churches in the whole of Britian, St Cuthbert's Kirk. Among other features in the church there is some excellent carved stonework around the entranceway. |

You can also visit the early 19th century stately home Dalmeny House, which is the family seat of the Earls of Roseberry. Built in the Tudor Gothic style, the house has some superb features including a hammerbeam roof in the main hall. Today Dalmeny House is open to the public. Amongst other points of interest it has an excellent collection of furniture as well as paintings by artists such as Gainsborough and Raeburn. The grounds are also excellent with beautiful views over the Firth of Forth. Dalmeny House is only open in July and August, although you can gain access to the grounds at other times. |
