The picturesque ruins of Craigmillar Castle are located a couple of miles to the south-east of central Edinburgh, between Duddingston and Liberton. |
There has been a castle on this site since at least the 12th century, however the remains that you see today come from the castle that was built here in the 15th century. The oldest part is the Tower House, whilst the Great Hall is remarkably intact. Craigmillar Castle is inextricably tied up in the history of Edinburgh for this is where the 16th century monarch Mary Queen of Scots escaped to after the murder of her favourite secretary David Rizzio. Mary subsequently used the Castle as her main residence and, because of the number of French in her court, it soon gained the nickname "Little France". However, after Mary's reign subsequent monarchs favoured other places of residence and so the castle gradually fell into disrepair. Craigmillar Castle is open daily, entry costs around £2 for adults. |
