Edinburgh Town Guide, Ceilidhs, 3K

When you are in Scotland you might hear mention of a "ceilidh" taking place somewhere.

If you do hear of one, don't miss it for a ceilidh is a perfect excuse to party Scottish style!

Edinburgh Town Guide, Ceilidhs, 1K The word "ceilidh" (pronounced "kaylee") is Gaelic for "visit" and was traditionally a Highland custom whereby friends visited each other in the evening. Stories and folk legends would be told, and there would be music, songs and dances.

Today ceilidhs are experiencing a revival in popularity although the emphasis tends to nowadays be on the music and dance elements. Traditional music is often interspersed with more modern numbers, but the dancing stays the same - hectic!

Don't be intimidated, it's easier than it looks, and there will usually be someone somewhere shouting out the steps. And if all else fails, watch for a bit, try to join in and someone will not doubt help you along.

To start off with, it is probably best if you have your own partner, although you will find that partners do tend to change during dances.

It's also worth noting if you are asked to dance by a stranger, you should feel free to accept, for in a ceilidh a request for a dance doesn't constitute a pick-up.
