Orientation in Cardiff

Cardiff basically has two city centres - the docklands to the south and to the north of the docks the area of the city centred around the Castle.

The docks could perhaps be considered the original city centre for this is where modern day Cardiff was born.

It was this area of the city that was the focus of the massive boom 19th century industrialisation that transformed the Cardiff from a small fishing village into one of the busiest ports in the world.

As Cardiff went into decline in the early part of the 20th century the docks suffered badly, and for many decades this was essentially a run-down no-go area.

But recent years have seen a dramatic transformation and rejuvenation of this part of the city.

This is where you will find the new developments of Cardiff Bay with attractions such as the Welsh Industrial and Maritime Museum and Techniquest.

The other city centre of Cardiff lies to the north of the docks, and has an equal claim to being the original city centre for it is centred around the remains of the Castle that was built here in 1093.

The main thoroughfare in this part of the city is the High Street/St Mary Street that runs between the Castle and the train station.

This area of the city is fairly compact and many of Cardiff's tourist attractions are within fairly easy walking distance.

To the north-east of the Castle you will find the National Museum of Wales, the Civic Centre and St David's Centre.

And to the south of the Castle is St John's Church and the Millennium Stadium, home to Welsh rugby.

If you don't feel like walking, the city has a good bus service, particularly useful for travelling to the docklands and back.
