Pembroke College

Pembroke College, located on Trumpington Street, was first founded in the 13th century by the then Bishop of Ely.

It is one of the prettiest of Cambridge's University Colleges, with several attractive courts linked by well laid out gardens - a delight to simply wander around.

The College's most famous past student is William Pitt the Younger who studied here aged just 15, and who went on to become Prime Minister by the age of 25.

But Pembroke College is perhaps best known for its lovely chapel, which dates from 1665 and which was the first ever commission for the world famous architect Christopher Wren.

Punting

One of the most popular traditions in Cambridge is to pack a picnic on a warm summers day and take to the river for a spot of punting.

The name "punting" comes from the traditional flat-bottomed boat, which is called a "punt". A long pole is then used to push the boat along.

Harder than it sounds (and looks), beginners often have problems getting the hang of it. But don't worry, you are also supplied with paddles so that if your pole gets stuck you can just paddle back to get it.

The Punt can usually hold up to 6 people (five sitting and one punting), and it is most fun if you can get a group together. And don't forget the all important picnic!

The parts of the river that run through some of the older University colleges, popularly known as the "Backs", are particularly picturesque and offer some great photo opportunities.

Some favourite starting off points for punting include Trinity College or Magdalene Bridge, where you can hire boats for around £10 an hour.
