Cambridge Orientation

The city of Cambridge is centred around a sweeping bend of the River Cam in the heart of the area known as the Fens.

These were originally a large area of marshland with small isolated communities living on "islands" above the marshes - Cambridge being one such community. The Fens have since been drained to provide an extensive area of flat, fertile land.

In the actual town of Cambridge the University dominates the town, but visitors are sometimes surprised to find that there is no University campus as such.

This is because, like Oxford, Cambridge's academic roots lie in monastic traditions. As a result the University of Cambridge is made up of over 30 separate colleges, each with their own unique histories and traditions.

These are scattered all over the town, but for the most part are located along the banks of the river. This means that the main tourist sights are all situated fairly close together, in the town centre.

The fact that Cambridge is so flat means that it is ideal for exploring by foot or by bicycle, although there is a good bus service for the less energetic!
