The elegant Bristol district of Clifton is located to the north west of the city. This area was originally a Victorian spa resort, and it is still one of the most exclusive districts of the city.

The area is well worth heading for to see some beautiful Georgian architecture, including Royal York Crescent - the longest Georgian crescent in England.

Clifton is most famous for its landmark Clifton Suspension Bridge that spans the Avon Gorge here.

The bridge is over 700ft long and sits nearly 250ft above the river's high water mark. Built in 1864, it was designed by renowned Victorian engineer and local man Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

On the Durdham Downs side of the Clifton Suspension bridge there is an Observatory with a Camera Obscura giving views across the city.

The Observatory is open daily, but opening hours vary according to the time of year so do check in advance. Admission costs around £1 for adults.

Also in Clifton is the renowned Bristol Zoo, home to over 1000 species of animals. The grounds are particularly attractive, the zoo being set in 12 acres of landscaped gardens.

The Zoo is also particularly noteworthy for being at the forefront of research, education and conservation, for example it participates in a wide variety of breeding programmes.

Bristol Zoo is open daily from 9am to 6pm in the summer and from 9am to 5pm in the winter. Admission costs around £6 for adults.
