Brighton Town Guide, North Laine, 2K
Brighton's North Laine district is located between North Street and the train station, the centre of it being the pedestrianised Kensington Gardens.

The area takes its name from the ancient word "Laine" meaning "strip of land" - for this part of Brighton was originally farmland.

But as the town rapidly expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries it was taken over by the Regency architecture that you see today.

Today North Laine rivals The Lanes for serious shopping. But whilst The Lanes are crowded with chic and exclusive boutiques, and prices to match, North Laine tends to be a bit more bohemian with lots of young, trendy stores selling jewellery, clothing and art.
