The Scottish town of Thornhill is located within the region that is known as Dumfries and Galloway. The region of Dumfries and Galloway is within the southwestern part of Scotland. The town of Thornhill is south of the town of Sanquhar and north of the town of Dumfries.
The town of Thornhill is home to a population of about two thousand six hundred. The town was first founded as a burgh that was known as Barony in 1664, however this town is thought to be older than this. During the eighteenth century the town was developed as an estate village for the nearby castle that is known as Drumlanrig.
There is a monument within the town that is in memory of Joseph Thomson who was an explorer. The Thomson Gazelle is named after Joseph Thomson. Joseph Thomson lived in the nearby area of Gatelawbridge and Penpont. The monument is located close to the local school.
The local school is known as Wallace Hall Academy and it got its name from the amalgamation of the school with Closeburn School. John Wallace originally founded the Closeburn School in 1723. John Wallace was a merchant in Glasgow and he was a native of Closeburn.
There are a number of famous people who are connected with Thornhill and these include the Scottish football legend Bobby Black and the golfer Andrew Coltart.
The town of Thornhill is well known for its fantastic fishing on the nearby rivers. The town is also well known for being home to a wide range of gift shops, boutiques and there are also two hairdressers within the town.
