The farm has been a B & B for over 35 years and the present owners, Penny Osborne and Margaret Roberts, have been here for eleven years. An on-going programme of development and refurbishment means our guests are never quite sure what they will find when they next return!
The long-awaited garden railway is up and running and a small Japanese garden has been constructed.
Guests come to the farmhouse for meals and to relax in the comfortable lounge, in front of a roaring log fire in the huge inglenook.
The accommodation is in the old stables and haybarn, which have been imaginatively restored and converted to provide seven pretty cottage-style bedrooms, with delightful names chosen to reflect their décor.
The character of these old farm buildings is retained in the exposed stone walls and original beams.
FRON OLEU FARM at Trawsfynydd lies mid-way between Porthmadog and Dolgellau, in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park.
It was once the home of the village corn miller and dates back to the early seventeen hundreds. It is central for attractions, convenient for mountain bikers - only a few minutes north of Coed y Brenin visitor centre and bike trails - and has safe bike storage.
Our llamas and small animals keep everyone entertained and our chickens provide us with free range eggs for breakfast.
THE ACCOMMODATION is all on the ground floor. It is well heated and each room has its own TV, hospitality tray and en-suite bath or shower room.
Individual front doors allow freedom of access, without disturbing other guests, (ideal for dog-owners!) and late arrivals are no problem! There is ample parking in the attractive well-lit courtyard.
In the cosy Stables, we have two double bedrooms, Poppy Fields and Forest Glade, and a twin bedded room, Spring Meadow. All three stable rooms have shower rooms.
The bedrooms in the Haybarn are slightly larger. Blue Lagoonis versatile and very popular, having a double bed and bunks. It is suitable for families, small groups or people with disabilities.
Finally, Snowy Peaks is our beautiful "honeymoon" room with a four poster bed, though you don't have to be on your honeymoon, to pamper yourself with a little extra luxury! This room has a new en-suite shower room.
As OLD MILL FARMHOUSE was once the home of the village corn miller, a feature water wheel was a 'must'. The water for the mill was carried along a canal which travelled through the main field, then under the road to the mill. The canal has now gone and, sadly, so has the mill but we have brought back a little atmosphere of bygone days with a working water wheel situated on the bank, overlooking the courtyard.
Since we live on the famous Welsh gold belt, we have acquired one of the old Hudson tipper wagons that hauled the gold bearing ore from the nearby Gwynfynydd gold mine. A kilo of this rare, high quality gold was presented to the Queen on her 60th birthday.
Many of our visitors are railway enthusiasts. We have a model garden railway ("Cedar Creek Railroad" - G scale) based on the Denver and Rio Grande, with a magnificent American trestle 3' high and 42' long. The trains are now running and we are working on the scenery and landscaping. Enthusiasts with a loco of their own are very welcome to bring them.
FRON OLEU is an ideal base from which to discover the many and varied attractions of the area. In every direction scenic drives will bring you to mountains, lakes, rivers and forests. Safe, sandy beaches are just twenty minutes drive from here. A pleasant walk through the Coed y Brenin forest will bring you to the interesting site of the old Gwynfynydd gold mine and two impressive water falls.
Seven of the Little Trains of Wales are easily accessible from Fron Oleu, including one to take you to the summit of Snowdon.
