Woodstock is a small English town that is located within the area of Oxfordshire. Woodstock is the home of Blenheim Palace. Blenheim Palace is a world heritage site of UNESCO. This location is actually where Winston Church was born in 1874. The town of Woodstock is located about eight miles northwest of Oxford and about eleven and a half miles southeast of Chipping Norton. This town is also about seventy-three miles away from the centre of London.
The nearby area of Bladon is home to the grave of Winston Churchill.
The eldest son and apparent heir of Edward the third was born in Woodstock Manor on the fifteenth of June 1330, his names was Edward and he was commonly known as Edward of Woodstock. Edward of Woodstock was also known as the Prince of Wales and Aquitaine, Earl of Chester and also the Duke of Cornwall.
Elizabeth the first was kept as a prisoner within the town when she was a princess. She was imprisoned within the gatehouse that was part of Woodstock Manor. The manor was actually too dilapidated to use to house her.
The Woodstock name dates back to the Anglo Saxon time. The name stands for a clearing in the woods. The Domesday Books says that Woodstock is a royal forest. It is thought that King Alfred stayed within the town of Woodstock during the year 890. Over the year the town has played host to a number of famous people.
