Wirral, situated in Merseyside, is located directly across the River Mersey from Liverpool. The peninsula can be accessed using one of two tunnels that connect it with Liverpool. Wirral is also just a short distance from the Lake District. The area that is known as the Wirral is a metropolitan borough that is located within Merseyside which itself is an area in the North Western part of England. The borough of Wirral actually takes up the northern sector of the Peninsula of Wirral.

The borough of Wirral has a population of around three hundred and eleven thousand two hundred and the area covers about sixty square miles. The Wirral area faces the city of Liverpool over the River Mersey in the east, the Irish Sea in the north and also the River Dee in the West.

There are a vast number of villages and towns within the borough of Wirral and these include West Kirby, Hoylake, Bebington, Birkenhead and also Wallasey.

The borough of the Wirral was first established during 1974 on the 1st of April and it was formed under the 1972 Act of the Local Government. The Wirral borough is the result of the merger of the borough of Birkenhead and also the borough of Wallasey.

When the Wirral borough was first set up during 1974 it actually inherited some pretty complex systems that were used by the former boroughs of Wallasey and Birkenhead.

During 2008 the borough was under the control of the liberal democrats and also the labour party. These political parties are among some of the largest council parties within the area.
