Wantage is an English town that is located in the county that is known as Oxfordshire within the area that is known as the Vale of the White Horse. This civil parish town was historically part of Berkshire. The town of Wantage is situated about seventeen miles south west of Oxford. Wantage is probably most popular as the place where Alfred the Great was born.
The town of Wantage is located at the bottom of the Berkshire Downs amongst the country that is associated with the prime horse racing industry. There are places where horses can gallop at the area that is known as Black Bushes and there is a few racing stables around this location and these include East Hendred, Lockinge and also Letcombe Bassett to name a few.
The area that is known as Wantage also includes the surrounding suburban areas that include Belmont and Charlton. The nearest small area that is still detached from the town is the area that is known as Grove. The parish of Wantage runs from the northern edge of the housing up onto the Downs in the south and includes places such as Edge Hill, Chain Hill and also Lattin Down to name a few.
The town of Wantage is the main touring area within this part of Oxfordshire. Wantage is home to the museum that that is known as Vale and Downland. There is a fairly big market square within the town and this is home to the statue that is very famous and is in memory of King Alfred.
