York Town Guide, White Rose of York, 1K Merchant Adventurer's Hall York Town Guide, White Rose of York, 1K

This hall, located on Fossgate, was built between 1357 and 1368. During the 13th and 14th centuries craftsmen were beginning to form themselves into "guilds" which were essentially professional bodies that regulated different trades.

One of the most powerful of York's guilds was the Merchant's Guild, which controlled trade in and out of the city. This building was their Guildhall, and the size of it is enough to indicate the wealth and power of its members.

Today Merchant's Adventurer's Hall is the biggest surviving half-timbered house in the whole of York, and it is still in use today by the Guild. However it is now also home to a museum which explains the structure and work of the guilds.

The Merchant Adventurer's Hall is open daily from 9am to 5pm. Entry costs around £2 for adults.
