Situated on the former site of York Castle, this fascinating museum covers everyday life in York from Elizabethan times right up until the present day, and it is considered by some to be one of the best museums in the whole country.

The building that it is housed in was once a debtor's prison, and amongst other things you can visit the cell where the famous 18th century highwayman Dick Turpin stayed the night before his execution.

The excellent collections include furniture, household objects, toys, posters and all sorts of gizmos and gadgets from through the ages. There is also an acclaimed Costume gallery, an extensive collection of armour and a 1,200 year old Viking helmet.

The exhibits are displayed in a series of period rooms ranging from the Georgian period to the 1950s and the highlight of the museum is a complete recreation of a Victorian cobbled street.

The York Castle Museum is open daily, but opening hours vary according to day and time of year so check in advance. Admission costs around £5 for adults.
