    The University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne is situated to the north of the city centre.

    With an excellent academic reputation, the University also ensures that the city retains its vibrant, youthful atmosphere.

    And for the visitor to Newcastle the University is well worth a visit for it is home to several excellent museums and art galleries.

    Try visiting the Museum of Antiquities, the Shefton Museum, the Hancock Museum or the Hatton Gallery.


    Museum of Antiquities

    The excellent Museum of Antiquities is the joint venture of the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

    As you would expect, the museum concentrates on Newcastle's Roman past, although it does cover other periods as well.

    It is home to an acclaimed collection of Roman artefacts both from the Roman fort of Pons Aelius and the nearby Hadrian's Wall.

    The Museum of Antiquities is located at the top end of King's Walk. It is open daily except Sundays from 10am to 5pm. Admission is free.


    The Shefton Museum of Greek Art and Archaeology

    Part of the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the Shefton Museum is named after Professor Brian Shefton who first founded the museum in 1956.

    Today it houses hundreds of Greek artefacts including a rare collection of arms and armour. And, although small, the museum has gained an excellent reputation world-wide.

    The museum is open from 9.30am to 4.30pm from Mondays to Fridays. Admission is free.


    The Hancock Museum

    The University of Newcastle's Hancock Museum dates back to 1884 and was initially based on the private collection of an 18th century naturalist.

    It then passed to the Natural History Society of Northumberland, Durham and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, who added to the collection. It is now huge, with hundreds of thousands of specimens!

    The museum was renamed in 1891 in honour of two local naturalists, the Hancock brothers, John and Albany.

    The Hancock Museum is open from 10am to 5pm Mondays to Saturdays and from 2pm to 5pm on Sundays. Admission costs around £2.25 for adults.


    The Hatton Gallery

    Along with several museums, the University of Newcastle also home to the excellent Hatton Gallery.

    As well as housing an acclaimed permanent collection, the gallery also hosts a wide variety of temporary exhibitions throughout the year.

    The Hatton Gallery is open from 10am to 5.30pm Mondays to Fridays. Admission is free.
