Laing Art Gallery
Newcastle's famous Laing Art Gallery is considered by many to be north-east England's best art gallery.
It has an excellent collection of British art including some important pieces from the Pre-Raphaelite movement and several dramatic landscapes by local artist John Martin.
Of particular interest is the gallery's "Art on Tyneside" exhibition which has won several national awards. It traces the development of the region's excellent arts and crafts tradition with sections on areas such as glassmaking and engraving.
The Laing Art Gallery is located on Higham Place to the east of the city centre. It is open from 10am to 5pm Mondays to Saturdays and from 2pm to 5pm on Sundays. Admission is free.
