Youth Hostels

There are numerous youth hostels scattered throughout London, both Youth Hostel Association ones and independent ones. They tend to range in size, price and quality a great deal so it is worth researching first.

Remember that in the summer months, all youth hostels get extremely busy so try to plan in advance and book some places.

Youth Hostel Association

There are 7 Youth Hostel Association hostels and these tend to be the best in terms of quality, but they are also amongst the most expensive hostels.

If you are a member of a Youth Hostel Association in your own country or any Hostelling International affiliated body, you will probably automatically be a member of the UK YHA. If you are not a member, you can join at any hostel or at the YHA shop in Covent Garden.

It is worth noting that YHA hostels tend to have a few more rules and a slightly stricter attitude than many independent hostels. So if you are looking for a laid back atmosphere or somewhere to share a room with your boy/girlfriend you might want to look elsewhere.

Independent Hostels

There are numerous independent hostels all over London so you might get one that is clean, with good facilities and at a bargain price, or you could find yourself in a hovel that costs the earth. The best advice is to shop around and above all, trust your judgement - if you don't like the atmosphere, feel unsafe or threatened, move on.

On the plus side, the independent hostels tend to be a bit more relaxed than the YHA ones so many travellers find the atmosphere more to their taste. They also can be quite a bit cheaper than the YHA hostels.

Good districts to try for independent hostels include Earls Court, Notting Hill, and Bayswater.
