In the 17th century a medicinal spring was found in this part of London. A spa town quickly grew up around the area, at one time attracting over 500 visitors a day.
One enterprising man, a Thomas Sadler, built a music house in order to entertain these visitors. It quickly became a huge success and, as well as music, the theatre held juggling, acrobatic and other performances.
Since then there has always been a thriving theatre located here, though the types of shows put on varied. By the mid 20th century the Sadler's Wells Theatre was famous for opera, ballet and drama.
Today the theatre is renowned for both classical and contemporary dance performances. It is also one of the main venues in London for visiting opera and ballet companies.
