Old Compton Street

SW1
W1 Nearest Tube: Tottenham Court Road

Old Compton Street runs right through the heart of Soho, and many regard it as the very heart of the district. Dating from the 1670s the street is named after Henry Compton who was once the Bishop of London.

As you would expect of the heart of Soho, Old Compton Street has its fair share of sex shops and strip joints. But there are also plenty of trendy shops and bistros here too. As a result the street is nearly always packed to the brim.

Old Compton Street is also famous for its thriving gay scene and so it is often considered to be the centre for London's gay and lesbian community.
