New Cross District
SE14
This district of south-east London is situated between Deptford and Peckham. The area is named after a coaching inn called the Golden Cross that used to be situated here.
Like so many parts of outer London, New Cross was a rural district for much of its history. It was only when the 19th century expansion of London reached the area that New Cross became developed.
But by the start of the 20th century New Cross had been transformed into the residential suburb that remains today. Whilst some of the old mansions and Georgian houses survive, much of the architecture of the district dates from this time.
