Glasgow Town Guide, Tenement House, 1K

Tenement House, located on Buccleuch Street on the northern edge of Merchant City, is one of Glasgow's more unusual attractions, but still well worth a visit.

The house was once the home of Agnes Toward, who lived here between 1911 and 1965 - and it is significant in that in all that time she never changed the interior.

Today the house belongs to the Scottish National Trust and is a remarkably well preserved glimpse into a bygone age when Glasgow prospered and tenement living was a way of life for the city's workers.

Agnes Toward was also an avid hoarder, and so as well as the preserved interior exhibits include early 20th century furniture and household goods as well as objects from her everyday life such as ration books, bills, letters and postcards.

Tenement House is open daily between March and October from 1.30pm to 5pm. Admission costs around £2.50 for adults, free to National Trust members.

This interesting house is located in Merchant City, the heart of Glasgow's commercial centre in the 18th century.

The roots of the house lie in the early 17th century when several of Glasgow's trades guilds joined together as one central guild.

The house was then built in 1791 as their headquarters, designed by the famous Scottish architect Robert Adams. This is significant in that this is the only surviving building in Glasgow to be built by Adams.

The wealth and influence of the merchants during this period is clearly evident in the elaborate carvings, décor and stained glass windows - and so Trades House remains an interesting legacy of this period.

Today you can visit the Trades House, but by appointment only. Admission is free.

Glasgow's Museum of Transport is located in the heart of Glasgow's West End, opposite the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

A must for all lovers of old vehicles, this is considered by many to be considered the best transport museum in the whole of the UK.

As you would expect there are plenty of old cars, buses, trams, bikes and trains, and they are displayed in imaginative and interesting ways.

For example there is a complete reconstruction of an early 20th century street, complete with shops.

And appropriately enough a separate section is dedicated to Glasgow's shipbuilding heritage.

The Museum of Transport is open daily from 10am to 5pm, except for Tuesdays. Admission is free.
