Barras Market is Glasgow's famous market which takes place between the London Road and Gallowgate in the East End of the city.

The market dates back to Victorian times when barrow-boys used to sell their goods here, and it was then granted market status in the 1920s.

At the weekends the market is well worth a visit, with over a thousand stalls to choose from and goods ranging from clothing to records and household goods.

But it is worth making sure that you have left the area by dusk - after all this is still Glasgow's East End.

Glasgow's Botanic Gardens are located to the north of the city, on Great Western Road.

Dating from the late 19th century, they are most famous for the Kibble Palace. This huge glasshouse was originally built near Loch Long, but was then transported in its entirity to its present position.

Alongside Kibble Palace, the gardens contain several other excellent glasshouses. Altogether there is a vast array of plants from all over the world, including an award winning orchid collection.

The Botanic Gardens are open daily from 7am to dusk, however Kibble Palace has seperate opening hours. Admission to the gardens is free.

Located in Pollok Park, to the south of the city, this is the private collection of wealthy industrialist Sir William Burrell who bequeathed it to the city of Glasgow in the 1940s.

The excellent collection includes Roman sculptures, Greek artefacts, Chinese ceramics and British furniture and furnishings.

There is also an extensive collection of art from Britain and Europe, including works by Degas, Sisley, Boudin and Glasgow-born Crawhall.

The collection is housed in a superb building designed by Barry Gasson in the 1970s as the result of a design competition.

The Burrell Collection is open daily from 10am to 5pm Mondays to Saturdays and from 11am to 5pm on Sundays. Admission is free.
