Jesus College |
The University College Jesus College is located just off Jesus Lane. It is a very pretty college for its elegant grounds sweep down to the banks of the River Cam. The College was founded in 1496 by the then Bishop of Ely, Bishop Alcock, on the grounds of a former nunnery. The layout of the College still reflects these ecclesiastical beginnings today, with, for example, several cloisters. The most famous part of the College is its Chapel, some parts of which date back to the 13th century. Much of the interior of the chapel, however, dates from the 19th century when it underwent extensive restorations. Some of the ceiling designs and stained glass windows are by the Pre-Raphaelite artist William Morris. |
St John's College |
St John's College is located on the banks of the River Cam, just north of Trinity College. It was founded in the early 16th century by Lady Margaret Beaufort, Henry VII's mother, and her coat of arms can be seen above the main entrance. It is most famous for the fact that it spans the River Cam, with two bridges linking the two sides of the college. One of these is the Bridge of Sighs, a replica of the more famous Venice original. Unfortunately the bridge isn't open to the public, but you can get an excellent view of it from St John's Bridge to the south. |
