Local Information and History
Sierra Leone is located on the coast of West Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean. Romarong was the first original name for Freetown. Capital of Sierra Leone, the name Sierra Leone dates backs to 1462 when a Portuguese explorer sailed down the coast of West Africa. Pedro de Cintra saw that the mountain ranges in Freetown resembled the shape of a sleeping lion and name the country sierra Lyoa. Slaves from America, Nova Scotia and the maroons from Jamaica settled in Freetown in the early 18th century. In the centre of Freetown is a cotton tree aged over 500 year which represented the slave’s freedom. Sierra Leone can boast of having some of the best natural sandy beaches in the world and also has an interesting birds and animal wildlife for guest to visit.
