The English market town of Sherborne is located within the northwestern part of Dorset. The town is located on the banks of the River Yeo along the A30 road. The town is situated on the edge of the vale that is known as Blackmore and it is also about six miles to the east of the town of Yeovil. The town of Sherborne has a population of about nine thousand three hundred and fifty and about forty one per cent of the population are retired.

The town of Sherborne is well known for its history and this includes the abbey, castles, private schools and manor houses that are located within the town. This town is very picturesque and is a very popular tourist location. There are a lot of buildings within the town that dates back to the Georgian times and also the medieval times.

A lot of the historic buildings including the abbey are built from ochre ham style of stone. The railway that is located within the town serves the town of Sherborne. The Saxons that once lived within the town of Sherborne called it scir burne, this name means clear stream.

The town of Sherborne was once made the capital of Wessex and it was also named as one of only seven Saxon kingdoms within England. The elder brothers of King Alfred that were known as King Ethelbald and King Ethelbert are buried within the abbey.

The town of Sherborne has a very strong educational network. The public school that is known as King Edwards dates back to 1550 and it was the school that King Alfred was educated at, however it has been refounded since this time. This public school is more commonly known as Sherborne School.
